Are background checks required for volunteers, tutors and mentors?Yes, Educate America, Inc. requires background checks for volunteers and employees that work with children and youth in support of our after-school programs, summer camps and STEAM programs.

Must volunteers obtain background check applications from their state or county police department and submit it with two (2) forms of government-issued ID in person or by mail?No. Educate America, Inc. has partnered with One Source, The Background Check Company, to safely and securely process background checks for our employees and volunteers.

Must volunteers pay for their own background checks?Yes, volunteers must pay for their own background checks, but may be reimbursed if they volunteer with Educate America, Inc. for a full school year.

How much does a One Source background check cost?The average cost for a One Source background check is $30, but can range from $20 to $55 depending on your specific circumstances.

May I obtain a copy of my background check for my personal records or other use?Yes. Volunteers may obtain copies of their background report using the One Source secure web portal.

As a volunteer, can the cost of my background check be written off on my taxes as a charitable contribution?Yes, the cost of your background check can be written off as a donation to Educate America Inc., a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
